Art in the heart

Large scale mural, 2024

In collaboration with The Art Supply Co., I created 30, vector, illustrated panels to be installed as a large scale mural for “the Skinny Building” downtown Pittsburgh. The panels were printed in vinyl and installed over lighted windows, creating a lightbox effect at night. I loved the idea of the windows being frames of an animation and to exemplify this I created a small animation of the panels in Photoshop.

I didn’t realize until I went to initially look at the building that I’d actually spent a lot of time on this street working as a barista back in the day. I loved the hustle and bustle of riding the bus downtown in the real early AM to open the cafe. It has been an honor to contribute to this street.

Win Some Lose Some

Large scale mural, 2022

In winter of 2022, Bunker Projects commissioned me to paint a mural in their back alleyway. In June 2022, I started the project, my first mural, and ended 2 1/2 months later. It has been one of my favorite projects to date. The creative director, Jesse Rommelt, was incredibly flexible, and what started as just a one wall mural grew to include three. I took inspiration from the incredible Maxo Vanka murals down the street from me in Millvale, one of my favorite street artists, Margaret Kilgallen, and legendary country music star Hank Williams. It’s vibrant, full of patterns, and featuring dogs, dancers, lionesses and angels. I learned so much on this project and can’t wait to paint another. Photos here by my talented cousin Young Sun Compton.

Mural Process
The mural took over 2 months to complete. Working in the summer I had to avoid the heat of the day and worked between 2pm and sun down. I projected the lettering, but every thing else was drawn by hand. I had some occasional helpers, but most of the work I did solo. As most of my work is digital, it took some time to adjust to the scale of the project. Once adjusted I can safely say I am now addicted and can’t wait to start my next project. Below is a little video capturing the process.

Spirit PGH Mural

Part of collaborative mural, August 2023

I was thrilled to be included in this collaborative mural on Spirit PGH in Lawrenceville. I got to try out spray paint, driving a lift, and working in a tight deadline (5 days). I had tons of fun and learned so much. Below is a process video.
